A Healthy, Happy Start to the New Year

The New Year is fast approaching, so you may be busy planning your New Year's Resolutions. But before making new changes to your lifestyle, remember to congratulate yourself on all the positive routines and habits you have already adopted.

A Healthy, Happy Start to the New Year

Adding more fruit and vegetables to your day

If you would like to add more fruit and vegetables into your diet, try washing and preparing them straight away when first purchased so that they are ready to cook. To make a meal, simply grab a handful or two of your favourite pre-prepped vegetables and add to everyday dinners like casseroles, pasta, curries, or roasts. Similarly, stir fry these with soy sauce (or coconut aminos), sesame oil, ginger and garlic and serve with brown rice or noodles and your choice of protein for a 10-minute meal!

Top Tip:

  • Items such as carrots and parsnips can brown if exposed to air, so be sure to store in an airtight container (or cover with water) to prevent this.

Another 5-a-day recipe is to make a vibrant, nutrient-packed salad with chopped cucumber, celery, tomatoes, bell pepper and lettuce. Dress with a little olive oil, lemon juice and thyme and serve alongside pasta dishes, homemade curries, jacket potatoes or in sandwiches and wraps.

Top Tip:

  • Liven up a salad by adding grated carrot, radish, avocado, spring onions, sweetcorn, olives. Experiment with different salad leaves to find your favourite; soft, peppery rocket, watercress, baby spinach, mild butterhead, crunchy sweetheart all offer different flavours and textures. Up the nutrition content by added a sprinkling of toasted pine nuts, pumpkin, sunflower or sesame seeds.
Reduce, reuse, recycle!

Nifty tools that help you cut down on your consumption over time, replace single-use papers, plastics or help recycle materials like metal are worth investing in! Although it requires remembering said product (because who hasn't forgotten to bring their reusable bag to the store) it is important that we all do our best to protect the environment. Dualit products are built to last and some are repairable for a longer lifetime. Our eco-friendly products include compostable coffee capsules and the EcoPress Aluminium Capsule Recycler. Dualit's EcoPress offers a mess free solution to recycling used aluminium coffee capsules.

Waste not, want not
  1. For those hoping to reduce food waste this year, dry or slightly stale bread can be used for a variety of tasty snacks, sides and dishes; add your favourite sandwich or toastie fillings between two slices of bread and toast using your Dualit Sandwich Cage for a hearty, wholesome lunch.
  2. Use the 700W Hand Blender and Chopping Bowl Attachment to blitz your bread into breadcrumbs and add to mince to bind burgers together for a healthier, at home takeaway. You could even chop stale bread into large chunks, drizzle with a little olive oil, garlic and oregano, before baking in the Dualit Mini Oven until crisp and golden brown to use as croutons in a salad or meal-prepped soups.
  3. Learn how stale cupboard items can also be revitalised. Crackers can be refreshed by baking on a low heat on a parchment lined baking tray for approximately 15 minutes. Once finished, allow to cool completely and then follow storage instructions given on the packet. Alternatively, splash with a little water and place in a microwave for 2-3 minutes. This method should bring the 'snap back into your cracker' and can also be used for plain biscuits such as rich tea or digestives. Serve with cheese, leftover dips or homemade Salmon PatƩ.
